Chromite

Chromite is composed of chromium, iron and oxygen (chemical formula FeCr2O4). It is an oxide mineral belonging to the spinel group. 

Sibelco chromite sand is used in the foundry industry as a moulding sand, as a pigment in ceramic glazes and container glass, and as an additive in brake lining applications.   

 Chromite sand is characterised by: 

  • high melting point 
  • excellent thermal stability 
  • high density  
  • medium Mohs hardness of 5.5
